Oil Change Basics for John Deere Skid Steer Loader

Oil Change Basics for John Deere Skid Steer Loader

If you’re planning to do an oil change on your John Deere skid steer or loader, this quick guide will walk you through the basics. We’ll cover where to find the oil drain plug, the oil filter, and what tools you’ll need to get the job done efficiently.

🔧 Tools & Parts You’ll Need:

  • New Oil Filter: In this example, a NAPA filter is used.
  • Wrenches:
    • 1 1/8-inch wrench (for the drain plug)
    • 1-inch wrench (to hold the back nut)
  • Socket set
  • Flathead screwdriver (optional, for cleaning out debris)
  • Impact driver (optional, but helpful)
  • At least two oil drain pans (these machines hold a lot of oil)

🛠 Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Locate the Oil Filter and Drain Plug

  • The oil filter is easily accessible from the engine bay.
  • The drain plug is located underneath the skid steer, behind an access panel.

2. Remove the Access Panel

  • Loosen the bolts holding the access panel. Some bolts may be corroded, so take your time and use penetrating oil if needed.
  • Once removed, you’ll see the drain plug assembly.

3. Clean Around the Drain Plug

  • Use a flathead screwdriver or your fingers to clean debris around the plug to ensure your socket fits properly.

4. Remove the Drain Plug

  • The drain plug consists of two parts: a front nut and a backing nut.
  • To remove it:
    • Hold the rear nut in place with a 1-inch wrench.
    • Use a 1 1/8-inch wrench and socket (or impact driver) on the front nut.
  • Loosen and remove the plug. Be ready with an oil pan—oil will drain quickly.

5. Prepare for a High Oil Volume

  • These machines hold a large amount of oil. Have a second drain pan ready to avoid overflow and spills.

6. Replace the Oil Filter

  • Remove the old filter and install the new one. Be sure to lubricate the gasket on the new filter before installation.
